Dear John,

I just got done testifying before the Oregon Board of Forestry (ODF) this morning. My message: pass a strong Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) to conserve Western Oregon’s State Forests. A strong HCP will help protect fish, wildlife, our climate, and the drinking water of rural Oregon communities. This is why we need ODF to pass the strongest HCP possible. Will you join us and ask the Oregon Board of Forestry to pass the strongest possible HCP to defend our publicly-owned forests? [[link removed]]

The Board of Forestry is accepting public comment for the next two weeks before they make a final decision. It is crucial that ODF pass a strong HCP. The health of forest ecosystems and the invaluable climate benefits they offer by storing large amounts of carbon depends on it. If passed, the HCP would limit harmful clear-cutting on public state forest lands in Western Oregon. Many critical and endangered species, such as spotted owls, would gain better protections under a strong HCP.

Industrial logging doesn’t just hurt trees and the animals who need them – it pollutes rivers and waterways too. This pollution damages the habitats of threatened fish like salmon and pollutes vital drinking water resources. Our state needs to prioritize wildlife, water, and public forest lands over clear-cutting and timber profits. Send the Board of Forestry a message urging them to pass the HCP using our easy, pre-written template! [[link removed]]

Everyone’s first experience witnessing the marvels of Oregon’s Western State Forests is unforgettable. The early-morning mist shrouding vibrant corridors of greenery. The rich aroma of old-growth Spruce trees. The squelching of mud beneath your feet as you follow a winding trail across roots and moss-covered rocks, tilting your head to the trees occasionally to identify the source of a musical birdsong echoing through silence. State forests aren’t only invaluable to the species who dwell within, but as recreation areas for people like us.

Unfortunately, Big Timber is doing everything they can to stop the Habitat Conservation Plan. That means we need a HUGE outpouring of public support for a strong HCP. It’s time to send a message to the Board of Forestry making it clear that Oregonians care about our publicly owned forests and won’t tolerate excessive clear-cutting on public lands. So, will you join me in asking them to pass a strong HCP and help preserve our forests for future generations? [[link removed]]

Thank you for your commitment to protecting our public lands,
