Five months after California ended its eviction moratorium and the state’s rent relief program closed, tens of thousands of families could be made homeless due to the program’s failures.

Take my 59-year old sister, who is severely physically and mentally disabled, Jessica Pimentel.  She is a qualified applicant for rent relief for whom I applied for on time. I turned in all the right paperwork, called the State’s Housing and Community Development (HCD) agency *every single week for months* asking if there was anything they needed from me to approve her application, and was told “no” and to “just wait,” only to be told later she was denied for “unresponsiveness.”

If the State doesn’t fix this wrongful denial and give my sister the rent relief she is due, she could die. She would not be able to survive on her own without housing and is currently being threatened with eviction because of the State’s failure.

Email Governor Newsom, the Director of HCD Gustavo Velesquez, and state leadership now and urge them to fix the tens of thousands of wrongful denials, approve the remaining 100,000+ qualified candidates, and get out the rent relief funding NOW or face surging homelessness! <[link removed]>

How did this happen? It started when California subcontracted out the implementation of this program to an out-of-state for-profit billion dollar corporation. In 2021, HCD hired Horne LLP to distribute billions of dollars in rent relief for a whopping $278 million - a company whose model is to profit from disaster. They’ve charged millions of dollars from governments to run social safety net programs established in the wake of calamitous events like hurricanes, floods, and more recently, pandemics.

California can no longer afford to privatize essential programs like ERAP with no accountability or consequences for failed work while lives are on the line. As the state scrambles to address the homelessness crisis, fixing ERAP is the LEAST they can do. Email Governor Newsom and HCD Director Velasquez and urge them to distribute the rent relief now! <[link removed]>

While Horne LLP threatens to sue our government for even MORE MONEY for failed work, my family waits in agony for a resolution. Every human being matters, and each one of us needs a home to survive. If California’s leadership agrees, they need to act urgently to fix this problem and get families the relief they are due.

Take 1 minute to email, tweet at and call California Leadership now and stop the homelessness crisis from getting far worse! <[link removed]>
