Today Donald Trump announced he would be running for president once again.

Clearly the time until our next presidential election nearly two years from now is uncertain for all of us, but I know one thing for certain right now: it's not about him. 2024 will not be a referendum on one guy for one office. It's going to be a referendum on who we are. It will be a referendum on patriotism, and my definition of patriotism is very simple: Patriotism means love of country, and you cannot love your country unless you love your fellow countrymen and countrywomen.

In 2020, that patriotism drove Americans to cast more votes to send Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House than any other political candidates in history. Your support flipped states from Georgia to Michigan to Arizona. Yes, we still have challenges, we still have problems, but none of them are bigger than who we are. The truth of America is that we win when we come together and show the best of who we are against the worst that we face.

We will either rise together, or fall apart; we must choose forward, we must choose inclusion. We must choose not to talk about problems, but to run towards them, to take them on – finding common ground to get things done.

Over the coming days and weeks, as Trump launches what we know will be another campaign of fear and lies, we must not forget this simple fact: the lines that divide us are nothing compared to the ties that bind us.

We are far more united, far more indivisible, far more involved in a larger common struggle than we know. Together we can build an America where there is opportunity in every community and justice is real for every person.

He may try to take us down, but America, with empathy, grace, and justice, we will rise.
