The election is over, but votes are still being counted in races all over the country. The battle for control of Congress hangs in the balance and it is likely we won’t know the outcome until next week.
Here in Iowa, we suffered some very tough losses.
From the governor’s race to the Senate race to Iowa’s longest serving Attorney General, Tom Miller, being defeated, it was a tough night. And we lost our lone Democratic member of the House.
While these are painful losses – there were some bright spots along the way. My friend and soon to be colleague in the State House Josh Turek won! And we elected Sami Scheetz, Adam Zabner and some other fantastic Democrats to the State House that I’m excited to work with.
This is not the first time we’ve had a tough election for Democrats in Iowa. But we’ve also come back and won seats we weren’t supposed to. And that’s because we showed up, listened to voters and put in the ground work in every single county in Iowa.
While this election didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to, we don’t give up. We pick ourselves back up and we get back to work. We need to earn every vote and prove to Iowa’s working families that Democrats are the party that shows up for them.
I promise you this: I’m going to fight like hell to deliver for Iowans when I’m in the State Legislature. And I’m going to fight like hell the next election to elect Democrats in Iowa that share our values of hard work, fair pay and an equal shake for all.
Don’t give up, the real work has just begun!
