You don’t usually get emails from me, but my name is Sarah Bryner, and I’m in charge of the OpenSecrets research team.

I am writing to ask you to support our research team’s final sprint on Election Day collecting, standardizing and processing thousands of data records to track billions of dollars spent this election cycle. ([link removed])

To be honest, I wrote this last Friday because today I am glued to my office chair, which is where I’ll stay until late into the night when election results are in. And it won’t just be me; the entire OpenSecrets staff will be entering election data as it comes in through the night and into the morning (sorry to whoever has Hawaii).

This Election Day, it’s all hands on deck.

While it’s one of the busiest, most exciting, and – yes – stressful days for our office, the work never ends. It takes countless hours to cover election results, tie those results back to the money, and analyze the impact that so much spending had on the outcomes.

And once the dust settles, we need to answer the big questions:

* Did money win?
* How impactful were mega donors, and did they get what they wanted?
* Where do we see huge concentrations of dark money?
* Who was excluded from the political process because they couldn’t raise enough cash in the primaries?

Our research team have worked on money in politics issues for a combined 225 years, and are experts in answering these types of questions, but there’s only so much ground we can cover with the resources available to us.
