When this picture was taken back in 2018, Violette was just eight years old. I knew that my first campaign for Congress would be an incredible opportunity for her to see what it means to be a leader.

As one of the few girls in my class at the Naval Academy, I constantly pressured myself to be better, tougher, and stronger than the boys. I wish someone had told me then that leadership isn't about being tough 100% of the time.

It doesn’t mean you’re never afraid, or stressed, or unsure. It doesn’t mean you can’t love “girly stuff,” and it doesn’t mean you can’t be a great mom, daughter, partner, or friend at the same time.

Now, as a member of Congress, I have a duty to make sure that my daughter's generation gets to enjoy all of the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities that I did.

But a new poll shows I’m tied with my GOP opponent Jen Kiggans, a right-wing radical who’s dedicated her political career to removing freedoms and shuttering opportunities for women and girls everywhere.
