OPEIU 2 workers at MTA approve historic deal

OPEIU Local 2 last week ratified one of the largest salary contracts for their members at the Maryland Transportation Administration (MTA). In addition to a 20% increase over four years -- with 10% of that this year - the deal includes a $1,700 signing bonus and a supplemental bonus of $1,050. "We upgraded about five classifications too," said Local 2's Mike Spiller. Also included is an attendance bonus of $800, with multiple incentive bonuses for unit wide attendance. Local 2 represents about 160 employees in the MTA offices, payroll and accounting and mobility call center.

In response to an ongoing attempt by coal mine owners to replace miners with convicts leased by the state, a group of miners burn the Tennessee Coal Mining Company stockade in Briceville and seize the Knoxville Iron Company stockade at Coal Creek, freeing over 300 convicts and supplying them with food and civilian clothes.
