Michael Barnes has been involved with public policy for 35 years. He began his career as a Washington State budget and economic analyst in the late 1980s. He returned to graduate school at UC Berkeley and taught introductory and upper division economic courses as a grad student instructor and an acting instructor. He joined the UC Office of the President staff as a research policy analyst and in 2017 finished his career back on the Berkeley campus and the science editor and writer for the Berkeley College of Chemistry. From 2002-06 he served on the Albany school board, and from 2012-20 on the city council, when he was termed out. He continues to be involved with housing policy as a member of the California Alliance of Local Electeds (CALE).
