Human Trafficking and the Marijuana Industry
The legal marijuana industry in the United States is worth billions of dollars. The illegal marijuana industry is expected to be worth even more. Reports of unlicensed growers and harvesters have popped up all across the country. In the last six weeks alone, media outlets reported on cases in California ([link removed]) and Oregon ([link removed]) with an alarming thing in common: labor trafficking. Such a lucrative industry is very attractive to traffickers looking to maximize profits by mistreating and deceiving workers. This reporting exposed some of the troubling practices of the marijuana industry, as well as the more troubling response to survivors. Check out our latest blog to read more about the workers and how anti-trafficking professionals should respond to similar cases.

Staff Takes on Misinformation in
Rolling Stone

FNUSA Executive Director, Jean Bruggeman, was quoted in Rolling Stone about a viral sex-trafficking video on TikTok. The video claimed that traffickers were targeting young children in Target parking lots through the game Marco Polo. This is not what human trafficking looks like in the US. “I have never heard a case of anyone being abducted from Target in my 20 years in this field.” This type of misinformation is not new, unfortunately. Human trafficking has been a favorite subject for fear-mongering and political posturing over the last several years. These falsehoods can be really harmful to trafficking survivors who actually need help. Read the article for more insights on how trending videos can be used to perpetuate incorrect information on trafficking.
