National Women's Law Center and NWLC United sign first contract

NWLC United and the National Women's Law Center on Thursday announced the ratification of their inaugural collective bargaining agreement (CBA). The agreement, signed on October 7, is the first union contract for employees of NWLC, who [link removed] formed a union with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) that was voluntarily recognized by NWLC on April 22, 2020. "The success of this first CBA is living proof that unions help women and gender-expansive people. It recognizes our staff's humanity over our labor, and it doesn't just help us--it provides material resources for our families, it is an investment in our communities, and it is an opportunity for radical rest and joy," said the NWLC United Bargaining Committee in a collective statement. The contract included improvements in pay, paid time off, COVID protections, and telework and remote work.

MD/DC AFL-CIO convention emphasizes solidarity, organizing

Over 250 Maryland labor leaders gathered last week in Baltimore for the 33rd Biennial Convention of the Maryland State and DC AFL-CIO. "Our solidarity must be unambiguous," said State fed president Donna Edwards, who was re-elected to lead the federation for a third term. "How we respond to today's challenges and opportunities will define who and what we are as a labor movement in the future." Solidarity, organizing, and welcoming new activists and unions was at the top of the agenda for the gathering, and an all-star line-up of political leaders addressed the convention, including U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, U.S. Representative Anthony Brown (MD 4), Maryland gubernatorial and lieutenant governor candidates Wes Moore and Aruna Miller, Maryland delegate Brooke Lierman (District 46), and Maryland Assembly Speaker Adrienne Jones. Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin (MD 8) keynoted the convention's dinner at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel. The convention also featured panels on "Young workers, new organizing and solidarity" and "Climate jobs". Among the members from the DMV elected to the state fed's executive board were Ottis Johnson (AFGE), Rick Compher (IAM), Michael Spiller (OPEIU 2), Herbert Harris (BLET), Robert Hollingsworth (AFSCME Council 20), Dena Briscoe (APWU), Chris Madello (UA 602), Stephen Courtien (WBCTC), Mark Federici (UFCW 400), Raymond Jackson (ATU 689), Dyana Forester (MWC), Joe Dabbs (IBEW 26), Tarren Peterson (SEIU 1199), Carl Carson. "This is our moment to be bold and to stake our claim to inspiring our unions and harnessing the vitality of new workers joining our labor movement," said Edwards.

A grocery worker's special birthday gift

"Happy birthday Darlene!"[link removed] tweeted Local 400. Biden also took time to shake hands with Local 400 members Bill Osborn from Giant Food in La Plata and Phil Contee from Safeway in Oxon Hill.
