Dear Ward 8 Residents,

There are too many District residents experiencing deplorable living conditions.

I have visited many housing communities with the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) and the DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA). Sadly, property owners get a slap on the wrist despite the deplorable living conditions at their properties.

Earlier this year, I did a sleep-in at a home in Potomac Gardens.  As a lawmaker, I wanted to experience what the families endured living in these properties daily. The gunshots, mold, mice scratching through the walls, and water leaking from one unit to the other create hazardous and inhumane living conditions that no one should have to live through.  Seeing firsthand the deplorable living conditions families were experiencing gave me more of an urgent quest to advocate and create ways to provide better living conditions for our residents who oftentimes feel hopeless and not heard.

During Tuesday's legislative hearing, the DC Council passed emergency legislation calling on more training and oversight of the DC Housing Authority. This vote would impose new requirements on the DC Housing Authority following a report from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development that found DC's public housing one of the worst in the US.
As Councilmembers, we represent the people of this city first. Therefore, we must ensure that residents can access safe and healthy living conditions.

The "Housing Authority Accountability Temporary Amendment Act of 2022" is the one step in the right direction to do something about these deplorable conditions within our public housing properties.

Regards,

Trayon White, Sr.

[Reminder] Immunizations are Required for School Attendance

Healthy bodies and minds are the foundation of academic success! Immunizations and regular visits to the doctor help protect students' health and readiness to learn. All students must be up to date on their routine pediatric immunizations or risk being removed from school. Additionally, the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine is required for all students age 12 and older beginning with the 2022-23 school year. Take steps now to ensure your student is on track with immunizations!

The best place for a family to access immunizations is their primary medical provider as part of a comprehensive well-child visit where the Universal Health Certificate is completed. If a family does not have a medical provider or they have difficulty securing an appointment, they can select one from a list of pediatric clinic locations in every ward. In addition, DC Health has temporarily expanded access to immunization services, which include:

  • Mobile Vaccination Units – DC Health has placed free mobile medical units at schools and additional sites at recreation centers, COVID Centers and other community locations in all eight wards. Dates and locations can be found here.
  • Children’s National Hospital Vaccination Clinics: Children’s National Hospital is offering free childhood vaccination clinics at five locations around the city. The clinics operate Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm, from Oct. 3, 2022 through Nov. 18, 2022. Additional evening and weekend hours will be available on select dates and at select locations. Families can call Children’s National Hospital at 1-800-884-BEAR (1-800-884-2327) and request to schedule an appointment. For more information, please see here.
  • COVID Centers – The COVID-19 vaccine is available for free to any individual age 6 months and older at the District’s COVID Centers located in all eight wards. More information on accessing the COVID-19 vaccine is available on the District’s coronavirus website

Together we can ensure students are healthy and ready to learn by protecting them and our community against infectious disease. Secure all necessary immunizations and submit health forms to school as soon as possible! To learn more about health forms and immunizations required for school, please visit the OSSE website and for more information on vaccine services and access, please visit the DC Health website

Faith in Vaccine Walk-Up Vaccination Sites are available for 1st dose, 2nd dose, and boosters. Pfizer vaccines for residents 12 years and older will be available at the walk-up vaccination sites listed. Visit: http://coronavirus.dc.gov/vaccine to learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine.
