Thank you to our volunteers!

Thank you to our volunteers! [ [link removed] ]

This past weekend's Neighborhood Litter Stomp was a great success. The key part of the event - our volunteers! Over 1,850 volunteers dedicated their Saturday morning to removing litter from neighborhoods, parks, streets, schools and other public areas around the city. This is the largest volunteer turnout this event has ever seen!

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and for making an enormous impact to our city. Here’s a quick “shout out” to a few participating organizations:

* North Crowley High School, who was our largest volunteer group with 85 people
* Lake Como Neighborhood Advisory Council
* DHL
* West Fort Worth Homeschoolers
* Longhorn Council Boy Scouts of America

Our individual spotlight goes to Jere Tucker, who removed the most litter for an individual...a whopping 141 pounds! If you volunteered, don't forget to submit your cleanup results to us [ [link removed] ]!

If you missed out on Litter Stomp, no need to worry! You can still participate in upcoming events or lead your own litter cleanup [ [link removed] ].

*

*Tour the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) - *Tour the Republic Services' Material Recovery Facility (MRF) on November 15, and learn how Fort Worth's residential recyclables are separated, processed, and baled. Sign up now! Congratulations to the Fort Worth Water Department!
Fort Worth Water won 2022 WaterSense Partner of the Year Award

The Fort Worth Water Department received from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) its second WaterSense [ [link removed] ] Partner of the Year Award. The prize was in recognition of its SmartRepair program, Leak Notification Program, and educational classes.

SmartRepair is a customer assistance program that fixes leaks and replaces fixtures for qualifying residents. In 2021 SmartRepair assisted 50 homes which resulted in an estimated 821,000 gallons of water saved. Find out more information about SmartRepair here [ [link removed] ]. Applications are available at all Fort Worth Public Libraries.

Fort Worth’s Leak Notification Program sent over 68,000 letters in 2021 alerting residents of possible leaks. The continuous usage letters are one of the many advantages of the new meters with the MyH2O program. Residents can now see their own usage and identify their own leaks online. Sign up for MyH2O here [ [link removed] ]. [ [link removed] ]

Fort Worth Water regularly collaborates with local partners to provide educational classes on water saving tips, gardening, and EPA WaterSense products to our residents. Classes typically run from late Winter to early Fall. Check back early next year to see Fort Worth’s 2023 classes at savefortworthwater.org [ [link removed] ].

City departments partner to improve Harwood St. area

This month, several City of Fort Worth departments came together to improve the 2600 block of Harwood St. around the E. Lancaster Ave. underpass and railroad bridge. Unified, staff removed litter and illegally dumped trash, abated homeless camps, mowed the right-of-ways, trimmed tree limbs that were blocking sidewalks, stairs, street lights and power lines within City of Fort Worth’s properties in the area. Teams also painted the underpass of the Lancaster bridge to abate graffiti. Additional work to restore lighting and repair concrete is in progress.

A big thanks to everyone involved, including staff from the Code Compliance, Parks & Recreation, and Transportation & Public Works departments. Working together made this project possible! “This is a great example of teamwork directed towards making Fort Worth a cleaner and safer community.” – said Cody Whittenburg, Code Compliance Assistant Director, Environmental Health Services. Hard-working crews, volunteers, and other staff made this long-overdue project possible. There is still work to be done - such as painting the railroad bridge and skid-steering the washed-out rocks and dirt - but the positive outcome can already be experienced by area residents.

Grapevine High School senior presents a study about microplastics in our waterways.

Microplastics in our waterways

Grapevine High School (GHS) senior, Akshaya Mohan, and other student researchers have studied microplastics in DFW reservoirs since 2019. Students were assisted by biology teacher Ms. Julee Sanders and Dr. Cynthia Fox, a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) fisheries biologist. Their results were presented during a KFWB's monthly board meeting.

For this project, 136 fish of 14 different species were collected during routine TPWD sampling. The digestive tracts of these fish were then inspected and students counted each piece of microplastics found. At least one microplastic was found in every sample, and a total of *109,707* microplastics from just 1.5 mL of stomach content per fish!

Microplastics can cause negative changes in growth, reproduction, and survival of fish, but everyone "can "help! Lower the amount of microplastics entering our rivers by using cloth or canvas grocery bags, reusable water bottles, agave or metal straws, and sandwich boxes instead of their single-use plastic counterparts. If we can all take these small steps, we really can make a difference.
