WHY THIS ELECTION MATTERS

ISSUES: Health care

"Every worker should have freedom to access the health care we need, including reproductive health care," says AFL-CIO president Liz Shuler. "And nothing should get in the way of that--not employers, big insurance companies or the government." But, Shuler adds, "we know the attacks on health care access will only get worse if more extremists are elected. Our fundamental health care freedoms are being threatened like never before." In this election, labor is supporting candidates who will bring down out-of-pocket expenses, lower the cost of prescription drugs, defend reproductive freedom, and stand up to the powerful drug and insurance companies and politicians who do their bidding.

VOTING TIPS: When, where and how

Maryland: Mail-in ballots must be postmarked or placed in a [link removed] designated ballot drop box [link removed] (en espanol) by 8 pm on November 8, 2022 for the Gubernatorial General Election.

To vote in person, Marylanders can vote during early voting or on election day:

Early voting will be held for 8 days and begin on Thursday, October 27, 2022 through Thursday, November 3, 2022 from 7 am until 8 pm for the Gubernatorial General Election. You can vote early at [link removed] any early voting center in the county you live in.

Trades: "Art without an audience"

"People think it's simple to fix a toilet, and they think it's simple to weld pipe," says Plumbers Local 5 apprentice Jack Thiess. "A guy I work with says it's `art without an audience'". The Local 5 training facility in Lanham, Maryland was featured on [link removed] last Sunday's CBS Sunday Morning, as veteran reporter and anchor Ted Koppel spoke with Plumbers Local 5 apprentices, journey-workers and leaders about the benefits of regulated union apprenticeships, where workers "get paid to learn a trade". Local 5 Business Manager T. Smalls said it's "a myth" that people in the trades are there "because they couldn't do anything else," pointing out that trades workers underpin much of modern infrastructure, including highways and I.T. Forester honored by Prince George's County Democratic Central Committee

Metro Washington Labor Council President Dyana Forester received the Prince George's County Democratic Central Committee's 2022 Labor and Workforce award at the committee's annual Ploughman & Fisherman Breakfast on October 15. The award honored Forester's work in the labor movement in Prince George's County. "It was such a wonderful surprise to receive this recognition," said Forester. "I was honored to accept it on behalf of all the labor leaders and activists in Prince George's County who have worked so hard for so long to ensure that worker's voices are heard in the corridors of power."

Eugene V. Debs, U.S. labor leader and socialist, dies in Elmhurst, Ill. Among his radical ideas: an eight-hour workday, pensions, workman's compensation, sick leave and social security. He ran for president from a jail cell in 1920 and got a million votes - 1926

Hollywood came under scrutiny as the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) opened hearings into alleged Communist influence within the motion picture industry. Dozens of union members were among those blacklisted following as a result of HUAC's activities - 1947

Presidential candidate Ronald Reagan writes to PATCO President Robert Poli with this promise: if the union endorses Reagan "I will take whatever steps are necessary to provide our air traffic controllers with the most modern equipment available and to adjust staff levels and work days so that they are commensurate with achieving a maximum degree of public safety." He got the endorsement. Nine months after the election, he fires the air traffic controllers for engaging in an illegal walkout over staffing levels and working conditions - 1980
