Dear John,

Despite our problems in this country, there is so much good that still remains. So many people mean well, work hard, and love each other. It’s not about whether we’re left or right; it's about operating out of basic goodwill. And most of us do. We need to take that spirit of goodwill and harness it for political purposes.

Politics is simply an expression of our collective behavior. Public policy affects the lives of millions and millions of people both here and around the world. We need to re-create our politics to make it reflective of our basic decency and goodwill. That’s why my campaign matters.

No matter what’s happening in our lives, as individuals or as a nation, we should care about “doing the right thing.”

We should do the right thing when it comes to policies that affect our children. We should do the right thing when it comes to policies that affect our money. We should do the right thing when it comes to policies that affect our health. We should do the right thing when it comes to policies that affect other countries. We should do the right thing when it comes to policies that affect our planet. We may or may not always agree on what the right thing to do would be, that’s a given. But the problem is that too often we’re not really thinking about doing the right thing when it comes to our collective behavior. In the absence of our vigilance, the U.S. government is too often a conduit for doing the wrong thing—something that might make a few people a lot of money, perhaps, but which hurts a lot of others in the process.

This is not a moment to ignore that. It is a moment to be blazingly aware of it, to put aside all childish things, to be very intellectually and emotionally sober, to participate in a collective realignment of our politics with the angels of our better nature.

That’s why I am running, and I have every indication that our message is being heard. It’s taken some time, but more and more people every day are waking up to the possibility that politics can reflect the best of who we are. You say something once, you say something twice, and at about the third time someone looks at you and goes, “Wow!!!”

That’s where we’re at in this campaign. Let’s keep this thing going. We’re beginning to soar.

Marianne
