John,
We accomplished amazing things in 2019, including some of the most important political victories that I’ve ever been a part of. But now’s the time to set our sights even higher.
We’re planning for 2020 to be our most ambitious year yet. The task ahead is monumental. To make the change we need, we have to turbocharge our organizing so that we can not just elect a powerful new slate of reform-minded district attorneys – but change the whole game.
The sad truth is that in the races we lost this year, it was mostly because we were out-organized or out-spent. We can’t let that happen again.
I want to be extremely open with you about the plan ahead – and I want to ask you to help fund it before our final, year-end fundraising deadline on December 31st.

We’re still determining which races to prioritize, but here’s the plan:
- Working with the reform-minded champions we already elected to roll out aggressive agendas. Now that they’ve won office, the work isn’t through. There’s still much to be done to craft and implement concrete policies that will change our justice system from the inside out – and to fight back against assaults on their offices.
- Recruiting public defenders to run for district attorney positions all over the country. This is not just about checking the right boxes, it’s about finding people who genuinely care about reform and have a demonstrated history that they will not buckle under pressure once in office.
- Scaling up a highly-informed, grassroots movement in key districts. We will focus on organizing that is both massive in scale and deep in skill. And we will continue educating the nation on the essential role of local DAs in the fight for justice reform.
- Mobilizing our national network to provide key support in important DA races. We will follow the lead of locally-rooted organizers, and we will use our strengths to support in the best ways possible. We will flex our volunteer muscle, use our megaphone to broaden reach, provide expert design and ad capacity, and help raise critical campaign funds.
- Fighting attacks from the opposition. We’re constantly under attack from those who oppose us. We have to spend critical time and resources fighting back with lawyers and pouring over filings to make sure everything we do is unassailable by those who want to stop us.
Above all, our success depends on thousands of people like you, volunteering, organizing, contributing, speaking out, working together to change the justice system from the inside out.
If this is a plan that you believe in, please help us fund it. We have an important fundraising goal to hit before December 31st, and we’re still short.
Love and appreciate you,
Shaun
