'Why We Must Not Lose Our Past'
Joint event on the fundamental importance of respecting our past to secure our future

Last week, 50 thought leaders and philanthropists gathered in NYC for a discussion on "Why We Must Not Lose Our Past," led by Dr. Wilfred McClay ([link removed]) , historian, JMC Board member, and author of American history textbook for secondary-school students, Land of Hope ([link removed]) .

The event was hosted in partnership between the Jack Miller Center ([link removed]) and the Meese Institute for Liberty and the American Project ([link removed]) at Pepperdine University.

Dr. McClay, the Victor Davis Hanson Chair in Classical History and Western Civilization at Hillsdale College, acknowledged the challenges we face in promoting American civic education, but his message was an optimistic one: we can teach our young people both the successes and failures in our history while still instilling within them the revolutionary hope and promise our Declaration offers all people.

As Dr. McClay eloquently wrote describing his book, “there is no necessary contradiction between an honest account of the American past and an inspiring one.”

McClay's Land of Hope: An Invitation to the Great American Story is no ordinary textbook, but one that is meant to pull the student into the narrative of America, both the good and the bad. In August, he also unveiled a new two-volume young readers edition ([link removed]) to join his high school level book.
The new volumes offers 5th - 8th grade students an accessible understanding of our common history.

In this time of deep division that is inculcating civics with partisan politics, improved teacher guides and balanced, innovative approaches to student textbooks like Dr. McClay's are more needed than ever. Now is the time to restore a strong, balanced civic education that is grounded in America's history and founding principles.

JMC is pursuing every opportunity to involve more scholars, teachers, philanthropists, and other influential Americans in a collaborative effort in this "battle for the soul of our nation."

We are hosting many events across the country, creating new partnerships with top civic-minded organizations, and growing our K-12 teacher education programs in new states and regions. This year, we are beginning state-wide programs in Texas, Wisconsin, and Virginia.

They say that change comes slowly, and then all at once. We believe that we are now in the "all at once phase," and we need to take advantage of that. We believe that the civic education of our young people is the most important investment in our country's future and to protect the American dream for coming generations of citizens.
