John – In the flurry of headlines last week, you may have missed the news that we succeeded in blocking Joe Manchin’s dirty fossil fuel giveaway!

A screenshot of a tweet from BNC Rep. Rashida Tlaib sent September 28, 2022, which reads: “We most empower environmental justice communities to lead our climate action. Their voices have been heard in Washington and the Dirty Deal has been blocked!” Included is a tweet from the Natural Resources Committee Democrats with a statement from Chairman Grijalva praising the outcome.

Here’s the scoop:

A few months ago Joe Manchin brokered a secret deal with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. He would finally back Biden’s climate bill in the Inflation Reduction Act – IF and only if he could attach a big giveaway to his fossil fuel donors in the next must-pass budget bill.

Disguised as “permitting reform,” Manchin’s dirty deal was really a scheme to make it easier for fossil fuel companies to skirt environmental regulations and expand drilling.

There are a hundred reasons this dirty deal had to be stopped, not the least of which was the fact Joe Manchin potentially stood to personally profit from some of the provisions due to his extensive fossil fuel investments.

But the biggest reason we had to stop this backroom deal is because it threatened to directly undermine the climate legislation we just passed a few months ago.

Progressives in Congress – including BNC representatives – rallied hard to stop this deal. And we won! Joe Manchin agreed to drop his bill from the budget vote last week.

This is fantastic news, and we are definitely celebrating. But we’re not done fighting. Manchin will keep trying to pass this bill loaded with giveaways for his Big Oil buddies.

That’s why we have to grow the ranks of unbought, unbossed, bold progressive fighters in Congress – especially in the U.S. Senate.

If Charles Booker and John Fetterman each succeed in flipping their Senate seats, progressives will control the Senate swing vote, and we can put Joe Manchin on the sidelines forever.

Defeating this deal is just the beginning, because Joe Manchin is not the only member of the “extinction caucus.”

The Oil and Gas industry has spent over $141 million dollars this cycle alone in lobbying and campaign contributions to members of Congress – and they give to both Republicans and Democrats.

As long as our lawmakers are on the take from the largest and most profitable polluters in the world, we will keep having this fight. That’s why neither Brand New Congress nor our candidates take a penny from corporate PACs or lobbyists.

We need your help to keep growing progressive power in Congress to stand up to Big Oil and fight for the Green New Deal. Can you pitch in any amount today to help our candidates win in November?

Celebrate this win today John, because we are just getting started.

In solidarity,

Brand New Congress

Since 2016 BNC has led the way in advancing popular policies like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal and electing bold progressive fighters. We recruited and elected AOC in 2018 and Cori Bush in 2020. With seven BNC Reps currently in office, we are growing progressive power in Congress.

This November we’re working to flip multiple red seats, fill open seats with bold progressives, and elect our first BNC Senator by defeating Rand Paul.

Pitch in today and join us as we take over Congress and return power to the people.
