John,
Christina Bohannan and Liz Mathis have a lot in common. They are both Social Security champions. They are both running for Congress in Iowa. And they both have the chance to defeat far-right Republicans who want to raise the retirement age.
Iowa is a relatively cheap place to run a campaign and buy television and radio ads. That means that our grassroots donations go furthest in races like these.
Fight for our earned benefits by splitting a contribution between Christina Bohannan, Liz Mathis, and Social Security Works.
Christina Bohannan knows first hand how important our earned benefits are. Bohannan says that when her father, a construction worker, became disabled, “Social Security and Medicare were absolute lifelines for our family, and I see that right now in Iowa with families that need those programs to get by.”
Bohannan’s opponent, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, has a long record of attacking our earned benefits. Miller-Meeks wants to privatize both Social Security and Medicare, and raise the retirement age.
Liz Mathis saw how important Social Security and Medicare were when serving as a caregiver for her parents, members of the Greatest Generation. Mathis says: “When I hear talk out of Washington (D.C.) about cutting Social Security and Medicare, I know who will pay the price. My family depended on those benefits. I’ll make sure they’re always there for yours.”
Mathis’s opponent, Rep. Ashley Hinson, wants to raise the retirement age and “make some tough decisions” about Social Security behind closed doors. And she supports a so-called Balanced Budget Amendment, which would make it unconstitutional for Social Security to pay promised benefits.
If Miller-Meeks and Hinson stay in Congress, they will vote to cut our earned benefits. That’s why we need to make sure that Bohannan and Mathis win.
