Dear John,
Across the city, we’ve seen an increase in abandoned senior pets. Discarded and scared, these animals desperately need adopters who see all they have to offer.

“They still have love to give. You really, truly don't know what they have lived through up until this point,” said Lauren Osborne, Assistant Director of Intake at PAWS Chicago.

Which makes changing their lives even more special.

“You're able to provide them with love and care that they might have never experienced before. Even though they have fewer years left, those years can be the best of their lives. And they pay it back.”

Even enjoying the simplest pleasures, like a human bed, is a big deal.

"They might not have had that opportunity before, and they just look at you and you're like, ‘Oh my goodness.’  The love...it’s just immediate.”

Last Chance to Help the Kittens

We found homes for more than 600 kittens this kitten season, but we still have work to do. A very special PAWS supporter challenged us to raise an extra $10,000 in September to save even more kittens. And when we raise $10,000, she'll match it with $10,000 of her own in honor of her cat, Buddy. Challenge accepted! One problem: September's almost over and we're still a few dollars short! Your donation today not only saves homeless pets, it helps us secure Buddy's full $10,000 pledge.

Make A Wish

It took three veterinarians to pull Wishbone through this emergency surgery.

Volunteer of the Month:
Cristal Powell

Cristal and her husband started fostering with PAWS Chicago in 2017.

“We took in a five-year-old dog who was recovering from a front leg amputation (shoutout to the amazing PAWS medical team) and quickly realized Roo belonged in our family. I had to earn it, but her love and friendship make every part of life exponentially better,” said Cristal.

After their epic foster fail (in the best way possible), Cristal wanted to help other dogs like Roo and started volunteering at our Lincoln Park Adoption Center in 2019. It’s been a part of her life ever since.

A Number No More

PAWS Chicago recently rescued a group of beagles from the only home they had ever known—a breeding facility in Virginia. Among 4,000 other beagles rescued from this facility, none had a name. Just an identification code tattooed inside their ears.

For years, these dogs woke up every day alone, just to be betrayed by humans over and over again. Now safely at PAWS Chicago, they are in their first stages of adapting to the wonders and chaos of a home environment.

Our veterinarians and behavior experts have developed individualized rehabilitation plans for each dog to help them adjust. When they are confident enough, these brave beagles will discover their own desires and personalities. And, eventually, families.

Thanks to your support, they’ll never be numbers again.
