Hello Ward 8 Residents,
As a father and someone who previously served as a school board representative, I understand the importance of education.

My office introduced "Community Conversations," tele-townhalls to address pressing issues facing our community. The next Community Conversation, which will be held on Thursday, September 29th, will focus on students, educators, and families in public education. We invited stakeholders to address:
* School Safety Plans & Initiatives
* Vaccination Requirements
* Teacher Support
* Learning Loss: What Are We Doing To Fill In The Gaps?

Community Conversations is a model to allow participants a chance to voice their opinions and discuss how the community can come together to improve some of our most pressing issues, in this case, our education system.

Join me and agency officials tomorrow, September 29th starting at 6:00 pm. Participants can join by phone at (855)-756-7529 extension 86449# or watch the townhall on the Zoom meeting platform at [link removed] ([link removed]) . Additionally, we will stream this event live on my facebook page
([link removed]) .

I look forward to the community attending this event to discuss obstacles facing our students to support their academic achievement.

Regards,

Trayon White, Sr.
Councilmember, Ward 8

DC Council to Switch Over to .Gov Domain Name

** The DC Council switched over from its longtime domain name, dccouncil.us, to the more secure, trusted, and accurate dccouncil.gov.
------------------------------------------------------------

This will be only the second time in the Council’s history that we will be changing domain names. The Council’s inaugural website was rolled out in 1997 at dccouncil.washington.dc.us. Just a few years after that, we transitioned to dccouncil.us, and we have been at that domain ever since.

All email sent to current dccouncil.us email addresses will automatically be forwarded to the corresponding dccouncil.gov email addresses. Similarly, all links to existing dccouncil.us websites will automatically redirect to the corresponding dccouncil.gov pages. (Nevertheless, please update your address books, website links and bookmarks, etc. to the new dccouncil.gov equivalent.)

While every effort is being made to avoid any disruptions to the Council’s operations or to the public’s ability to interact with us, please keep in mind that the changeover is a complicated logistical effort with many moving parts. Some challenges are inevitable, so please bear with us if necessary.

The DOTGOV Online Trust in Government Act, as passed by Congress in 2019, encourages state and local government agencies to shift to .gov domain names in the interest of security and improved administration. Among other things, the law transfers authority over the .gov domain from its prior home in the General Services Administration to the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).3322

Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) and others reiterated that commitment while breaking ground on the redevelopment, conceptualized by the D.C. Housing Authority more than a decade ago as officials sought to break up concentrated poverty in areas with distressed public housing ([link removed]) . In a nod to Matthews and others who had fought to protect the community, Ward 8 D.C. Council member Trayon White Sr. (D) opened his remarks on Monday by stating: “It’s been a long time coming.”

Twelve years ago, “there were a lot of residents who were feeling afraid, insecure about what would happen and would they be able to come back,” White said. “Today, we are making a promise that you will be able to come back.”

The D.C. Council will consider a significant amount of legislation before it closes out Council Period 24 which ends on Dec. 31. The bills will deal with a wide range of subjects including affordable housing, public safety, and improving the District’s education system, and economic development.

One item that has garnered a lot of attention which the council passed on first reading on Sept. 20 is the “Players Lounge Tax Exemption Act of 2022.” The bill is named after the Players Lounge, known by locals as Georgena’s – a popular Ward 8 restaurant and bar located on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE. The co-owners, Steve and Georgena Thompson are seeking the assistance of the District government in the form of a property tax exemption due to the adverse economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic. To stay afloat, the Thompsons have had to tap into their personal savings and other assets.
