*No Student Should Go Hungry*

On Wednesday, I joined
Representative Emily Kinkead, school administrators, advocates, and
parents to discuss the importance of ensuring that all Pennsylvania
students have reliable access to nutritious school meals every
day.

We're excited for the Universal Free Breakfast Program [link
8] announced earlier this month, which will provide free breakfast to
all Pennsylvania students enrolled in schools that participate in the
National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, beginning October
1. However, this program only covers breakfast and will expire after
the 2022-23 school year.

That's why I've introduced the "No Student
Should Go Hungry Universal School Meals" [link 9] legislation, which
creates a Special Fund, funded from the state General Fund revenue,
that would dedicate $275 million per year to feed all Pennsylvania
students breakfast and lunch.

For perspective, Pennsylvania's
entire budget is $45.2 billion. It would take just 0.006% of that
budget to feed every student across Pennsylvania a nutritious
breakfast and lunch every school day. I've heard from so many parents
who are grateful that they don't have to worry about paying for
breakfast this year. I've heard from educators and administrators
across the Commonwealth about how much this means for their students.
0.006% isn't too much to ask to ensure that every kid across
Pennsylvania is fed and ready to learn every day at school.

*National
Aviary Legislative Breakfast*

We attended a legislative breakfast
at the National Aviary [link 14] on Pittsburgh's Northside last Friday
to hear about the remarkable conservation and educational work they do
from Executive Director Cheryl Tracy. We were also treated to a
behind-the-scenes private tour of their Avian Hospital and habitats!
The National Aviary is America's only independent indoor nonprofit zoo
dedicated to birds. We are incredibly fortunate to have this valuable
recreational asset in Pittsburgh. Thank you to the staff of
conservationists, researchers, and educators that make the National
Aviary a world-class institution!

*New PennDOT Driver's License/ID Cards!*

The
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) [link 19] is now
issuing new driver's license and photo ID cards state-wide that
improve security and prevent fraud and alterations. The cards will be

visibly different from existing cards. New cards with REAL ID [link
20] will still have a star in an orange circle in the right-hand
corner and include the same security features as non-REAL ID cards.
New security features include:

-
*Guilloche Security Design:*
embedded patterning used for high security documents.

-
*Optically Variable Ghost Portrait: *features that change their
appearance when the viewing angle of the card changes, moving from
visible to non-visible.

-
*Variable Data with UV:* ultraviolet
light exposure reveals fluorescence regardless of viewing angle.

-
*Dynamic Look-Through Element:* a dynamic feature with gold metallic
tint visible under direct lighting.

Reminder: REAL ID is voluntary.
A REAL ID driver's license/photo ID, passport or military ID will be
required for domestic commercial air travel starting May 3,
2023.

For more information on the new cards go to Article (pa.gov)
