Weekly Newsletter September 25th, 2022 Miller-Meeks Mailer Friends, Thank you for signing up for my weekly newsletter, where you can find updates on my work in Washington and across the Second District. Visit My Website Iowans in D.C. It is always great to meet with Iowans while they are in Washington! It truly is my favorite part of serving in Congress. Speaking to residents of the Second District allows me to stay informed of what is going on in their communities and what I can do to help. This week I met with the American Academy of Dermatology where we discussed legislation to improve access to care for Iowans. Our men and women in uniform devote their lives to our country, and their service should always be recognized. I was proud to meet veterans from across eastern Iowa this week as a part the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight, which is is an organization that sends World War II, Korean, and Vietnam veterans to Washington D.C. to visit memorials dedicated to their service to our country. During the Honor Flight, I had the honor of presenting Cotton Henderson, a WWII Army veteran from Sigourney, with a flag that was flown over the United States Capitol in honor of his service. Mr. Henderson served in the Army during World War II from 1942-1946 first as an engineer building bridges and later as a guard for Prisoners of War. Floor Speeches This week, I took time on the floor of the House of Representatives to address the crisis at the southern border. This past weekend, 1,433 migrants attempted to cross the border and claim asylum. In this group, there were four gang members, one sex offender, and one migrant with an active warrant out for their arrest. We need to approach immigration with common sense legislation that prevents bad actors like this from entering our country. To watch all of my floor speeches from this week, click HERE. I also joined my GOP colleagues in a press conference about how inflation is crushing Iowans. The price of groceries and school supplies continue to rise, hurting our families right as children return to school. Instead of fighting inflation, Democrats and President Biden are passing legislation such as the Inflation Reduction Act, that will send several hundred billion dollars to partisan projects. We need to enact policies that allow Americans to keep more of their hard-earned paychecks. To watch my full remarks at the press conference, click HERE. Committee Work This week I joined the Homeland Security Committee for a hearing about expanding accessibility to safe drinking water in rural areas. I also addressed witnesses in the Select COVID-19 Committee about some of the reckless decisions state governor's in nursing homes that led to unnecessary deaths. To watch my full remarks click HERE. Legislative Roundup This week I introduced the Know Before You Owe Federal Student Loan Act. This legislation would require Institutes of Higher Education (IHEs) to counsel students before any federal loans are disbursed. I also joined House Education and Labor Committee Ranking Member Virginia Foxx (NC-05) in a letter demanding that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) review President Biden's plan to forgive federal student loans. Despite efforts by President Biden and Democrats to ‘forgive’ student loans, they are still a major financial commitment and should be treated as such. Before taking out federal student loans, proper counseling for students should be required. We must ensure our students are equipped with the guidance needed to make an informed decision and that they understand the process to pay these loans back. Full text of the legislation can be found HERE. Other News This week I joined P&G for their annual disaster relief kit packing event. Each year over 700 kits are prepared and delivered to families and communities affected by natural disaster. I also joined Kraft Heinz at the 2022 Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing Event. Since its creation in 2013, Kraft Heinz has sent over 400 million meals across the world nourishing millions of lives with one bag containing six meals. I also enjoyed meeting with the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association to talk about ways they are working to improve America's infrastructure. I wrapped up my week by welcoming freshman members of the Hungarian Parliament and talk about our commitment to serving those we represent. Be sure to follow me on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube for more updates. ### Rep.
