Dear friends,
This is a transformational victory: Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law AB 2097, a landmark bill that ends nearly a century of parking mandates in cities throughout the state!
We couldn't have done it without your help. YIMBYs across the state made thousands of calls and emails to your legislators and to the governor, and it made a difference. Last year, parking reform didn't even make it out of the legislature. This year, it became law.
Our ability to keep winning victories like this hedges on whether we can elect more housing champions in the November election.
Will you chip in $20 or more to help California YIMBY elect legislators who will continue to prioritize housing for people over parking for cars?

AB 2097 will reduce the cost of housing while slashing the pollution that causes climate change by eliminating expensive parking mandates for homes and commercial buildings near transit, or in neighborhoods with low rates of car use.
Governor Newsom doesn't usually make a video to announce a bill signing – but he did for AB 2097. In his remarks, he showed he strongly agrees that parking reform is a key element of making housing more affordable, reducing climate pollution, and building walkable, accessible communities.
This wasn't an easy victory; it's the product of years of advocacy. YIMBYs like you met with legislators, called and emailed their offices, and told the governor this was a priority.
Bill sponsor Asm. Laura Friedman worked with Sen. Anthony Portantino to craft a bill that was able to pass the legislature. Even then, it wasn't a sure thing that the governor would sign it. Opponents put on a full court press urging him to veto AB 2097. But YIMBYs stepped up – again – and showed the governor he’d have strong support for taking this bold step and signing the bill.
The November election will play a key role in our ability to rack up more wins like this. Because of term limits, 25 percent of the legislature will be newly elected. Some of our strongest allies are retiring.
We have great housing champions who are in close races in key swing seats. When YIMBYs stepped up to help elect strong allies like Scott Wiener and Buffy Wicks, it not only helped add more voices and votes for more housing – it also showed legislators that their voters want them to embrace the policies our movement supports.
AB 2097 is a major victory and we're excited to celebrate it with you. Winning more elections in November will help us celebrate more legislative victories in the future.
So friends, if you're fired up by finally turning parking reform into law and want California to go further in 2023, now is the time to help California YIMBY elect more housing champions!
