Hi JOHN,

On September 20, 2011, the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" policy was repealed. Today marks that important anniversary, ending a law that had only allowed LGBTQ+ service members to be in the U.S. armed forces if they kept their sexual orientation a secret.

I was proud to serve as Senior Advisor in the Pentagon in the Obama Administration at that time, and to help work on the repeal of this discriminatory law.

I am also extremely proud of all of the progress we made toward equality in those eight years in office.

As you may have seen in the news lately, Republicans are on a rampage to roll back the progress on LGBTQ+ rights. They've passed laws that limit the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals to get access to healthcare, play the sports they choose, and feel safe in public spaces.

No one, especially those who have given their lives in service of our country, should be targeted by their government simply for who they are or who they love.

I will always stand up and be an ally for the LGBTQ+ community. But, like many of you, I know that a Republican takeover of Congress in November will set us back astronomically. We can’t let that happen.
