At the start of March, here’s what the generic Congressional ballot projection – the assessment of whether Americans want Republican or Democrat leadership in Washington – looked like nationwide (source: FiveThirtyEight):

Republicans - 44.8%
Democrats - 42.7%

Now? Here’s what that number looks like as of last week:

Republicans - 43.7%
Democrats - 44.9%

That’s Republicans falling behind Democrats and losing momentum at the absolute worst possible time.
