Recently, I visited detention facilities on America's southern border. There, I saw firsthand the cruelty and suffering that's at the heart of Donald Trump's immigration policies.

My immediate reaction: we should all be ashamed that this is happening on American soil. We must not stop fighting until every single family is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

An immediate action we all can take: contribute to support humanitarian organizations that are trying to help those who are suffering thanks to Trump's heartlessness.

My colleague, Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, who joined me on my visit, put it really, really well:

"It is easy to feel numb and hopeless here at the McAllen Border Station, where both those seeking a safer and better life and border patrol staff alike are asked to exist in unacceptable and deplorable conditions."

We must fight through this numbness. We must rise up and work to restore the humanity that has been stolen thanks to this awfulness.

It is my firm belief that the United States has a moral obligation to lead an effort with the international community to help those who seek asylum at our borders, who look to us as they try to find a safe haven for their families.

Donald Trump has abandoned our moral obligations. He doesn't seem to think twice about separating families and jailing children in deplorable, horrific conditions.

While we fight in Congress to right these inhumane policies, your support of humanitarian organizations on the ground is critical. Join me in supporting the network of advocacy organizations working to protect and provide critical resources to immigrant families at the U.S. border.
