** ZOO FAILURES LEAD TO DEAD ANIMALS

PLEASE RESPOND TODAY!

Dear John,

He had never encountered a motorway before. The loud noises and speeding objects were scary and overwhelming. But he finally had his freedom. So he ran.

After the car hit him, he was captured and taken back to the zoo. Tragically, he didn’t survive his injuries.

Oscar was a spider monkey, a critically endangered primate who was held captive at Belfast Zoo. He made his escape from the zoo after four months of captivity there, in a bid for freedom. Tragically he died after being hit by a car on the M2 motorway.

I know like me you will be upset by this story. To see a wild animal like this die on a UK motorway. So unnatural and so wrong. This is why you and I need to keep fighting, for as long as it takes, to end the captivity industry and set others like him free. Will you make a donation today to aid this fight? ([link removed])

A spider monkey like Oscar knows nothing about the environment of a city. He knows nothing of the climate, the man-made objects, the buildings. Native to the rainforests of South America, his body and his mind know exactly how to live and survive in the treetops. Not the concrete jungle.

But he craved freedom so badly he took the risk. Or should I say, the zoo took a risk with his life by keeping him captive thousands of miles away from the natural environment he should have lived in.

Zoos are failing animals. And when zoos make mistakes, animals pay. And some are killed by the zookeepers themselves.

Margaash the snow leopard was shot dead by keepers at Dudley Zoo after he too escaped his enclosure. A member of staff had left the door open and he paid the ultimate price for seeking his freedom.

An antelope escaped from Paignton Zoo after jumping over the fence that held him captive. He was captured but when returned to the zoo the staff shot him dead.

Lilleth the lynx escaped from Borth Zoo and was on the run for nearly two weeks when she too was shot dead.

A white rhino fell into a ditch after escaping from South Lakes Safari Zoo. He weighed three-tonnes and struggled to get out. Whilst down, he was shot dead by the zoo owner.

What a cruel punishment for simply wanting to be free! And what a price to pay because the zoo failed to meet the basic requirements of keeping animals safe. This is why animals should not be held captive in zoos. Their lives are at risk either through the daily suffering of being held imprisoned, or from death at the hands of their captors if they escape.

Please will you make a donation today to make sure we can keep exposing zoo failings? Will you help us show that the government needs to seriously look at the future of zoos and the animals held captive within them? ([link removed])

We may be up against a lot but you can make change happen. The actions of people like you have helped so many animals escape from places of misery and have helped to slowly chip away at this industry.

It might be too late for Oscar and the other animals who have died. But we can, and we must, keep fighting to protect animals from this awful fate. It is clear the system isn’t doing enough to protect them. So you and I need to.

For the animals,

Dr Andrew Kelly
Director
Freedom for Animals
P.S. Animals held captive in zoos will do anything to be free. Tragically, many lose their lives if they try to escape. Please will you make a donation to help expose zoo failings? And to keep up the fight to end zoos completely? ([link removed]) Thank you.
