John,

Last month, while campaigning for Governor, Darren Bailey called Chicago a "hellhole"... twice.

Honestly, part of me didn't even want to dignify his comments with a response. But I also can't sit by while Bailey devalues our city and discredits the work of activists and community leaders to make our diverse, complicated, beautiful city even better.

When I think of Chicago, I think about our vibrant neighborhoods and our rich history. I think of our world-class food, culture, and arts. I think of the future generations that we're raising, that will make our world a better place. We have had — and will continue to face — great challenges. But the Chicago spirit has always been one to confront those challenges, and to overcome them together.

So no, Darren Bailey, Chicago is not a hellhole. But your campaign for Governor is certainly what I'd call a dumpster fire.

I am deeply invested in the success of Chicago. You can join me in making our city the best it can be by supporting my reelection campaign >>
