Hey John,
This time last year, I was excited to return to Oxford High School to begin my senior year. Two months later, my entire world changed.
On November 30th, a student at my high school shot and killed four students and injured seven people. I was fortunate to survive by jumping out of a window, but this should have never happened.
My story is not an anomaly in America.
Just six months later, I would be standing on stage at the second march for our lives in Washington, DC after another mass school shooting. This time in Uvalde, Texas, where 21 innocent lives were stolen at Robb Elementary School.
We cannot afford another deadly school year, John. Kids are heading back to school this week, and it’s a reminder that we still have a long way to go to pass gun safety legislation to make sure our classrooms are safe, such as an assault weapons ban. Schools should not become America’s hunting grounds.
This is also the closest we’ve come to passing this piece of legislation in over a decade, and it’s up to you and me to keep the pressure on our senators to get it on President Biden’s desk.
We’ve made huge progress since I spoke on that stage in June — and thousands of people across the world joined me in demanding our elected officials take action to end gun violence. It’s proof that our collective power is greater than the lawmakers that protect the gun lobby instead of children.
We won’t stop organizing, showing up at our elected officials’ offices, or marching until our classrooms are a place of learning and not a place where we fear for our lives, because children deserve to feel safe.
