Dear Friends,
Just 12 votes separate Isabel Longoria, one of our endorsed candidates, from victory in her race for Houston City Council District H. We’re watching developments in this race that is currently too close to call.
While two of our other endorsed candidates in the runoff, Sandra Rodriguez and Raj Salhotra, did not win this time, we’re extremely proud of the campaigns they ran to lift up our community and our city. We also want to congratulate Mayor Turner for winning his re-election campaign.
The work continues.
We spoke with the Houston Chronicle regarding the makeup of the next Houston City Council:
“Andy Canales, chairman of the Latino Texas political action committee, said he was disappointed by the lack of Latino representation on council.”
“We need to make sure that our city council reflects the demographics of our city,” Canales said. “We constantly tout Houston as the most diverse city in the nation, but diversity without inclusion is meaningless.”
Latinos in Houston make up nearly half of the population, yet we could potentially only have 1 Latino on Houston City Council (out of 16) again. We’re better, stronger, and more effective when all of us have a voice at the decision-making table.

This year the Latino Texas PAC invested $40,000 in Latino candidates and we block walked countless hours. These folks were first time candidates, trail blazers, and willing to step up and represent ALL Houstonians. Although the results are not what we had hoped for we continue to persist in our endeavor to elect more candidates that reflect the diversity of our city.
