Dear Friend,

A happy belated Labor Day to you. It's the unofficial end of summer and seen by many as the beginning of the campaign season. It's also a very important day to me and so many of you as we make sure we value work and working Americans. I was proud to speak yesterday at the Chili Cookoff about the progress we have made with NoVaLabor and the many unions that have been part of our efforts over the past four years.
Yesterday at Arlington Democrats Chili Cookoff where Brooke and I won a Silver Medal for de Ferranti's delicious White Chicken Sausage and White Bean Chili
I've led on Collective Bargaining, Prevailing Wage, helping prevent wage theft and job misclassification and I am honored to be the only candidate with Labor support in this race. Our work is not close to done: one of the main reasons I am running for re-election is to continue advocating for working class Arlington residents.
On Sunday, I went to a Sip In to support Unionizing Strabucks Workers
Tonight at 7 pm the first debate of this campaign will be held in front of Arlington's Civic Federation. The debate will focus on missing middle. I ask you to join me with your blue Matt de Ferranti for Arlington T-Shirt if you are willing and able:

in-person at Hazel Auditorium, Virginia Hospital Center.

Thank you for all you are doing to help us win. Over the weekend yard signs appeared for one of my competitors that said "Stop Missing Middle." This is another indication that this campaign will be a difficult one and I believe the election will include a large number of votes categorically against us due to missing middle. We must meet the moment as you have always done, by working hard.

For each of you reading this, the details of missing middle matter very much. Categorical opposition is disappointing to me. My position: I support thoughtful missing middle policies to expand housing options for all Arlington residents. The details of our policy must be informed by continued engagement. That means that I have come to the following tenants, so far: I support duplexes and triplexes and, on the largest lots, fourplexes. I do not support eightplexes because I think the costs for what will likely be rental units are greater than the benefit. I also support tiering--putting into law that duplexes are the most allowed on small lots, triplexes the most on larger lots, and four plexes on our larger lots. Equity is inextricably linked to this overall debate. We must work for our ideals and stand for them, while listening and being civil in engaging with everyone.

That's part of why I hope you can join me tonight or come canvass Saturday or chip in as I work to raise the resources we need to win.

Gratefully,

Matt
