Hi John,

Today I want to thank the workers who are doing the hard jobs behind the scenes, who don’t get the recognition they deserve, who are the backbone of our society.

A couple weeks ago I met with home health care workers. The work they do is so important and so intensive – and yet, they get very little recognition. How was this group of health care workers spending their off time? They were knocking on doors to engage people in Atlanta and get out the vote this election. We should all aspire to be so dedicated to the greater good.

This Labor Day, we should reflect on how important so many different types of workers are in our everyday lives, and we should commit to giving them the tools they need to earn a good wage with dignity and respect. And in the history of our country, there has been no greater force for workers’ rights than organized labor.

In the current economy, American workers are the strongest they’ve ever been. More than ever before, they can set the terms of their employment. And that strength is amplified by unionization. Workers deserve to share in the success of their companies. If CEOs can travel to space, they can afford to share some of their wealth with the many people who made their success possible.

So thank you to the many workers throughout our country who are the reason that our interdependent society can function.

In solidarity,

Hank Johnson
