When we fight for the right to organize, we’re fighting for fair wages. Safe working conditions. Equitable benefits. And so much more.

Labor Day is personal to me. My parents fought for those rights as part of the farmworkers’ movement. I’ve seen firsthand the fruits of the labor of my parents and so many others who fought for the rights of working families.

My parents worked alongside Dolores Huerta, Cesar Chavez, Philip Vera Cruz, and many others to advocate for better working conditions and pay. Now, I’m proud to stand by the side of this new generation of leaders who are fighting for the rights of working Californians.

It’s why last year, I secured a judgment holding Amazon accountable for harmful labor conditions, I defended California’s nation-leading labor laws in court, and led a coalition of attorneys general in calling on Congress to pass landmark legislation to protect the right to organize, unionize, and bargain collectively – because it’s not just about ensuring that people get a living wage in the present, it’s about building a world where doors are open for the next generation.

We’ve made a lot of progress, particularly here in California. Workers in California have the right to organize and join a union, are protected from wage theft, can refuse to do unsafe work, and have protection from retaliation for exercising their rights.

But we still have work to do. I’m committed to that work so that – like my parents did for me and so many others – our children face a brighter future.
