Hi, it’s Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

I wanted to take a minute to wish you a safe and relaxing Labor Day.

Today we’re celebrating the accomplishments won by the labor movement for workers in Chicago and across the U.S.

I’m the daughter of low-wage workers from a struggling steel town, who held multiple jobs to make ends meet. I watched my own parents face low wages, poor working conditions, job instability, and other exploitation. And I saw labor unions transform the lives of struggling workers through the power of collective bargaining.

When I became mayor, I knew I wanted to use my platform to work with the labor movement to push a bold, pro-worker agenda. I’m incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made for the hundreds of thousands of workers in this city.

In particular, I’ve fought for a $15 minimum wage hike and joined with organized labor to push for a fair workweek ordinance, requiring large Chicago employers to give workers at least two weeks’ notice of their schedules and compensate them for last-minute changes. And I fought hard to prevent layoffs and keep city workers on the job in my 2020 budget.

That’s why I launched my petition drive to secure my place on the ballot at the Plumbers Local 130 labor hall - because labor is central to my work as mayor. I look forward to standing with them and our labor brothers and sisters for the next four years.

I’ll have more to say in the coming weeks and months. But for now, I want to wish you a happy, safe, and restful Labor Day.

To all the workers of Chicago, thank you!

Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot
