John, it’s Labor Day. Besides being the unofficial end to summer, today is a day to honor our historic, and continuing, labor movement.

I am proud to come from a family that represents some of our great American labor unions. I have relatives in the American Federation of Teachers, and my son (pictured above) is a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers.

Unions built our country through blood, sweat, and tears, and built the greatest economy the world has ever known. But, it hasn’t always been sunshine and roses for the American worker.

We commemorate this day because we cannot lose sight of the long struggle it took to achieve a minimum wage, a five-day work week, and an eight-hour workday. But, we also need to look ahead and realize that our fight isn’t over.

As a former minimum wage worker, I can tell you that workers are still getting stiffed and families are struggling to make ends meet. Our minimum wage in Virginia does not sustain our families, especially when you have to choose between putting food on the table or paying your rent. Trust me, I’ve been there. We need to work together to uplift our working families to ensure they are making a livable wage.

As the next Virginia Senator for the thirty-third district, I am someone who understands the plight of working families and will continue to fight and be your voice in Richmond! Let’s get to work!
