Learn more about what my office has been up to this week Dear john, This weekend, families across the country will fire up the grill and celebrate Labor Day. I am proud to honor the hard-working Americans who support our nation and our economy, and I hope you and your loved ones will be able to enjoy some time off as we close out the summer. As I reflect on the last month, I am so pleased that I had the opportunity to connect with so many Sixth District residents during the August Work Period. Whether you joined my Telephone Town Hall this past week, participated in a roundtable, or visited my office to request assistance with a federal casework issue, know how very much I appreciate your engagement with my office. Here are some of my favorite highlights from this week: On Monday afternoon, I convened a roundtable with the Coalition of Refugee Service Agencies to learn more about the current challenges that Georgia's refugee community is facing. I am so proud of the work that is being done by the organizations represented in this coalition, and I look forward to continuing to champion policies in Washington that will support those who are seeking a new home in America. Following my visit with CRSA, I welcomed community leaders and stakeholders for a legislative briefing on the Safer Communities Act. We were joined remotely by an expert from Everytown for Gun Safety to share some of the many ways this historic bipartisan agreement will reduce gun violence in our community. In Washington, I will continue to fight for commonsense solutions to keep families safe. On Monday night, I was so pleased to speak with many of you during my Senior Resource Telephone Town Hall. The evening's conversation was filled with helpful information for our seniors and their loved ones. If you were able to attend, I hope you found our experts' presentations informative. If you need to follow up on a question that you have from the event, please don't hesitate to get in touch with my office. I began my day Tuesday with a visit to Sprayberry High School, where I shared resources and convened a presentation from the Library of Congress focused on the Veterans History Project. Telling the stories of our veterans is a crucial part of documenting American history, and I am so thrilled that our young people are eager to be part of that process. You can click on the image above to see a quick video of our visit. On Tuesday afternoon, I joined up with my colleague Congresswoman Nikema Williams for a visit to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where we met with top officials for a conversation on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic response, as well as the monkeypox outbreak. We also discussed forthcoming research on gun violence--a direct result of funding I helped secure in 2019 for the CDC to study this issue for the first time in decades. I look forward to staying in contact with our public health experts as we navigate current challenges and work to prevent future pandemics. I am so grateful to have been able to share these updates during the August Work Period, and I look forward to sharing more when Congress returns to Washington this month.
