Flood Response and Recovery Update

Thank you to everyone that answered the call to pick up the massive amount of litter deposited from last week?s rain event!

The partnership between the City of Fort Worth, Keep Fort Worth Beautiful, Trinity River Water District (TRWD), UpSpire, Streams & Valleys, and hundreds of eager volunteers resulted in over?"*28,500 pounds of litter and debris*" collected. These efforts made a huge difference for our favorite river, its banks and surrounding trails!

Cleanup efforts began quickly after identifying areas of the river most impacted by last week's storms, starting with Panther Island. This iconic spot is where crews removed some of the heaviest trash loads, while volunteers focused on some our city?s most-traveled trails. In all, their efforts removed one and a half dumpsters from the island in one day!

The next day, this collaborative group moved to a one-mile stretch of the bank along the Trinity River near 4th?Street.

Over these four days, Thursday-Sunday,?*356* of our amazing Keep Fort Worth Beautiful volunteers responded alongside work crews. Volunteers showed their Trinity River pride by cleaning sites such as Panther Island, Clear Fork Trailhead, Cold Springs Trailhead, Greenway Park, the Isbell Road Pond, and the White Settlement Trailhead.

Lake Worth and Lake Arlington

Many local waterbodies were affected by last week's storms. City staff is working to mitigate the effects of the storm on Lake Arlington and Lake Worth and is currently working with contractors to abate the issue.

Volunteers wishing to assist at these locations should stay within public areas and respond to litter and debris only when safe to do so.?Stay along higher, land-accessible areas only, and *_do not_* attempt to clear litter or debris from lakes, waterways or hard-to-access areas.

LITTER ALERT: Rains Forecasted!

Rain

Last week?s massive litter deposits highlight the importance of preventing litter before it ever enters the environment. Help stop litter in our community!

Rain is forecasted today, Wednesday and Thursday this week. In heavy rain, be sure to place bins on your curb the morning of collection. Leaving the bin by curb overnight may result in litter in the environment if it is displaced by rain. Always be sure trash is bagged in a closing bin to prevent litter in our community!?

Safety is our biggest priority. Volunteers picking up the litter should keep these tips in mind:

* Never lead litter pick-ups in lightning or heavy rain.
* Stay on high ground when cleaning litter along river and creek banks.
* Drink plenty of water.
* Monitor the temperature and watch for signs of heat stress.?
* Stay in a group and be especially careful with young volunteers!
