Dear Friends,

Last week, Joe Biden announced his fundamentally unfair plan to cancel up to $10,000 in student loans for individuals making up to $125,000 and $20,000 in loans for Pell grant recipients, which could cost up to $500 billion. This big government socialist policy comes directly at the expense of taxpayers – many of whom have fully paid off their student loans, worked hard to pay for their education, or chose not to enroll in college at all.

Even though 87% of adults in the U.S. don’t have student loans, Biden is implementing this radical policy that spends $500 billion in American tax dollars to pay off the wealthy college goers debt – and by dumping this unnecessary spending into an already uneasy economy, this policy will continue to drive up inflation. Simply put, hardworking Americans are not responsible for paying off the student loan debt of others. This is stealing from folks who did the right thing, and it takes the incompetent leadership of this president to a new low.

To make matters worse, the President lacks the Constitutional authority to take this unilateral step which is why I introduced the Student Loan Accountability Act back in June to provide an additional safeguard against executive overreach. This legislation would prohibit the Biden administration from canceling student loan debt on a mass scale. Additionally, this bill prevents forgiven loans from being tax-exempt and blocks the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from sharing American’s tax data for the purpose of implementing mass loan cancellation. Click here to read more about this important legislation.

On Friday, I joined 93 of my Republican colleagues in sending a letter to Speaker Pelosi about Biden’s student loan giveaway. Even Pelosi said last year that President Biden had no executive authority to cancel student loans, only Congress does. The American people deserve answers.

Honoring Our Fallen Heroes
One-year ago on August 26th, 13 U.S. service members tragically lost their lives following a heinous terrorist attack while serving in Afghanistan. That solemn day will never be forgotten and our nation will always honor and remember their heroism and bravery under extremely difficult circumstances.

All-of-the-Above Energy Tour

As President Biden continues his all-out attack on American energy independence, causing gas prices and utility prices to hit record-highs across the country, the Republican conference continues to advocate for an “all-of-the-above” energy solution to meet our nation's needs through innovative solutions. Instead of picking winners and losers in the energy industry, we stand united in supporting an "all-of-the-above" energy approach needed to ensure America is energy independent, and not subject to the uncertainty of being reliant on foreign imports.

Last week, I joined Congresswomen Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) on her Iowa Energy Tour. This tour was very insightful and allowed me to observe the variety of innovative energy solutions in Iowa including renewable fuels, organic material, wind, and solar energy – which creates electricity and powers their state’s transportation sector.

During the visit, we toured a variety of sites including Central Iowa Power Cooperative, the MidAmerican Wind Turbine at the Iowa State Fair, VERBIO renewable natural gas plant, REG biodiesel, and Consumer Energy Cooperative’s solar installation. We discussed the need for an “all-of-the-above” energy approach so the U.S. energy sector can be affordable, accessible, and profitable. It was great to see firsthand how Iowa is utilizing innovative solutions and natural resources to safeguard their energy sector.

Even before the White House made its plans public, Rep. Drew FERGUSON, R-West Point, filed a bill in June that would make it illegal for Biden to cancel student loan debt. Ferguson’s measure, called the Student Loan Accountability Act, hasn’t gone anywhere in the Democratically controlled Congress. But now that the president has unveiled his plan, many GOP lawmakers have pointed to it as a vehicle to rein Biden in.

Thankfully, members of Congress are working on providing it. Georgia’s own Rep. Drew FERGUSON (R-GA) is a lead sponsor of the bipartisan, bicameral PASTEUR Act, which would institute a subscription-style model for certain antimicrobials. Just as Netflix subscribers pay a flat fee to stream as little or as much content as they want, the government would pay developers a set amount up front for access to novel antimicrobials.
