I'm excited to announce that the winners of our 2022 Jan Allen Courage Award are Senator Gladys Robinson and Rep. Julie von Haefen! Sen. Robinson was elected in 2010 and Rep. von Haefen in 2018, and they have both spent their time in office fighting for the rights of women and families.
During her tenure in the NCGA, Sen. Robinson has championed over 125 bills which sought to ensure funds for health care facilities, drug treatment and mental health centers, Medicaid expansion, paid sick days and efforts to decrease maternal and infant mortality. Most recently, she has been a co-sponsor of the Codify Roe and Casey Protections bill introduced in the NCGA.
In the NC House, Rep. von Haefen has helped her caucus coordinate their defensive response to anti-choice bills, authored budget amendments that would remove state funding for fake pregnancy centers that exist primarily to bully people seeking abortion care, and worked diligently to educate other lawmakers about CPCs and the harm they bring to local communities.
