Dear John

The British government has finally announced it will join the Rohingya genocide case at the International Court of Justice!

This is a huge campaign success. Thank you to everyone who wrote to the Foreign Secretary and to their MP.

Five years ago, when the Burmese military launched their military offensive against the Rohingya, they did so calculating that the international community would do nothing. Just as they had done nothing when the Burmese military had attacked other ethnic groups.

And then, having been allowed to get away with genocide of the Rohingya, they believed they could also get away with holding a coup.

Human rights activists in Burma have long told us that ensuring the military is held to account for their crimes is crucial to help prevent further human rights violations.

Thanks to your support, today we have taken an important step towards that goal.

The British government will bring expertise and resources to the first ever case where a UN court is hearing evidence of violations of international law by the Burmese military.

It’s a victory for the Rohingya communities who campaigned for this, and we have to thank members of Parliament, in particular Rushanara Ali MP, for their constant pressure on the government.

Campaigning can take time; it can be frustratingly slow. This campaign has taken almost three years. But relentlessly using every option and opportunity to pressure the government has worked.
