Team,

The excitement of a new box of crayons or a fresh back-to-school wardrobe is in the air this week as thousands of children across the Commonwealth are headed back to school.

And as we begin a near pre-pandemic school year, the reality of the end of Covid-era protections also comes to a head. This includes free school meals for millions of children in food-insecure households across the country.

Earlier this month, Republicans in Congress blocked extending universal free school meals.

Letting children go hungry should not be up for debate. And any party that votes to rescind these critical safety net protections should not be in power.

Stand with me right now: Donate to my campaign [[link removed]] and help me continue this fight in Virginia in the face of senseless greed and GOP self-interest.

The Food Research and Action Center, a nonprofit that works to improve the nutrition, health, and well-being of Americans struggling against poverty-related hunger, analyzed 62 large school districts across the country and here’s what they found:

* Over 95 percent of districts reported meal waivers decreased hunger among students.
* 89 percent stated the universal free meal waivers make life easier for parents – especially those in a single-parent household.
* And 85 percent said the waivers erased the stigma associated with free school meals.

Here’s the ugly truth: The end of Covid protections means millions of children who are on the cusp will go hungry. Struggling families will have to decide between a hot meal or making rent.

Children already have a lot on their little shoulders, especially after a global pandemic. Trying to figure out where their next meal is going to come from shouldn’t be one of them.

Please help me continue to fight for critical safety net programs by supporting my campaign. [[link removed]]
