Dear Christopher,

We have seven years to take urgent, radical action on climate change—and if I’m president, we will. From the appointment of a world-class environmentalist to head the Environmental Protection Agency to embarking on a WWII-level mass mobilization to reverse climate change, the United States will lead the world in transitioning from a dirty economy to a clean one.

We need to sequester carbon, reforest, develop green energy systems and replace old ones at an unprecedented rate, transition away from animal factory farms—and quickly. If we do not make those changes within seven years, we could face massive social collapse within the next twenty that’s unlike anything we’ve seen in the modern era. Whole swaths of countries, even continents, could become uninhabitable due to the heat—creating food shortages, economic collapse, and possibly hundreds of millions of climate-refugees.

We must not—we will not—allow this to happen.

But doing this won’t be simple, and it won’t be possible unless we’re united in the effort. A war against climate change will not be waged successfully if we’re trying to do it while at war with each other. We didn’t help win WWII with Democrats fighting Republicans!

I don’t want to call the heads of fossil fuel companies into the Oval Office to read them the riot act; I want to call them into the Oval Office to enlist their help.

The industries that have done industrial-scale harm to the earth will be needed to lead the way in doing industrial-scale repair. A just transition will involve repurposing the talents of more than a million working Americans, and this must be done with the highest level of organizational excellence and respect. As president, I’ll make sure that no working American will be allowed to fall through the cracks.

I’m not naïve about any of this, and neither should you be. But we’re not going to fight our way out of our climate emergency; we’re going to collaborate our way out of it. What we need in a president is not just someone who understands what needs to be done. We need someone who can motivate the American people to involve themselves heart and soul in the effort.

Americans are hardwired to do great things, and reversing climate change is going to be one of our greatest. We will lead, and we will succeed.

We’re a generation about to make an extraordinary shift from distracted to determined.

Let’s start that now.

Marianne
