Dear John

We hope you enjoy the following extract from Michael Cassidy's latest letter.

60 YEARS! 60 YEARS! 60 YEARS!

No, it’s not sixty years since I last wrote, although it feels to me a little bit like that, because I haven’t written since the middle of December last year.

60 years stands for the 60 years to the day, this Friday, August 12th, since our first ever AE Mission to Maritzburg opened on August 12th 1962! I may not be able to remember what happened yesterday, but I can remember what happened 60 years ago, as if it were yesterday! Maritzburg had its first ever traffic jam at 6.30 in the evening, and this terrified a group of AE team juveniles who had stepped out into this thing in wild faith found themselves confronted with a packed City Hall. And thus it was for two weeks. It had not happened before. And it has not happened since. But I think the Lord did something very special in order to launch our ministry and establish AE’s calling and vision. No, it wasn’t just a dream, but a calling with substance and reality. It was the Lord confirming His call and launching us into the future.

He was also answering prayer as you will know if you have read or dipped into my memoirs, Footprints in the African Sand. Because there I tell of my walk along a beach in Monrovia, Liberia in 1961. And as I walked along the pristine and unmarked beach, I said to the Lord: “ Lord, I am going to walk 50 paces along this beach and for every footprint in this African Sand, I am asking you for a year of ministry in Africa.” And how gracious and wonderful our dear Lord has been in letting me see not just those 50 years of ministry, but now 60, and I will be looking forward, God willing, to celebrating 70!

All I can say is that we have experienced the most extraordinary faithfulness from our Lord. First of all in opening doors all over the continent, secondly in raising up 11 wonderful teams to tackle the task, and then finally came the Lord’s glorious provision of the financial resources to make all this possible. I see this as a miraculous manifestation of His supernatural power. Of course, as you would guess, my heart has been caught up in the preparation for the 60th Anniversary Celebrations.

The theme for these celebrations is Holding True and Pressing On. This comes from Paul’s words in Philippians 3: “ Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on towards the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus ” (verses 13-14). The Apostle Paul then adds: “ Only let us hold true to what we have attained. ”

Our main International and Pan African team celebrations will be in Lusaka, again followed by a breathtakingly large citywide mission. I think some 3 000 missioners will be involved. I can’t imagine it. Carol and I, as excited as little children are both going, this being our first international travel in over two years. But I felt that before the Lord takes me Home, I wanted to meet all the team leaders, old and new, and all the Pan African Board members, and just celebrate all the Lord has done in our ever expanding ministry. I can never adequately praise the Lord that He has allowed me to see this day and register more deeply than ever that the AE ministry is truly planted and thoroughly rooted in African soil.

Let me leave you finally once again with the Apostle’s exhortation “ to forget what lies behind, and strain forward to what lies ahead, and press on towards the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus…and let us hold true to what we have attained ” (Philippians 3:13,14,16).

Much love in Christ to each one of you from Carol and all our family and me,

Michael

Prayer Points:

*
Please join us in blessing the Lord for all He has allowed us to see and pray that we will be now launched with even greater dedication into the challenges of the next 60 years.
*
Let us thank God for His extraordinary faithfulness over the past 60 years.
*
Pray that that the 90 minute documentary, The Threatened Miracle of South Africa’s Democracy, will be viewed by many and bring everyone to the kind of prayer seen in the early 90’s.
*
Pray for Michael and all the AE teams involved in the 60th missions for strength, guidance and wisdom.
*
Pray with us that AE can “hold true” to all the Lord has shown us and taught us over the last 60 years, and courage AE to ”press on” in all the Lord has for us in the next 60 years.
*
Pray with us so there may be a mighty harvest of people responding to Christ during the 60th missions.
