Even as climate disasters continue to unfold around us, including a series of fires here in Eastern Washington, the historic passage of the Inflation Reduction Act is a moment for hope.

For many, many, years countless Americans -- especially young people -- have fought heart and soul for action. And now we have made a huge step forward, thanks to them and thanks to you. Following the lead of many of the initiatives we've pushed forward in Washington state, this legislation will help transition our nation towards a clean energy economy while significantly reducing our carbon emissions.

In addition to lowering energy costs and helping us meet our decarbonization goals, the Inflation Reduction Act will also lower healthcare and prescription drug costs. It will save lives and keep more hard-earned dollars' in American's pockets.

In a whole lot of ways, the common-sense policies it puts forward mirror what we've long been building towards here in Washington state: a clean-energy economy, good paying jobs, and affordable health care for everyone. I am grateful for the leadership of my colleagues, Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, for heroically delivering this legislation for Washingtonians and every American.

A few years back, I ran for president to put the climate crisis front and center on the national agenda. While the passage of the IRA closes one tremendous chapter in our long fight against the climate crisis, our work must continue. Up next, we desperately need more bold action on the state-level -- paired with aggressive executive action from President Biden.

This wouldn't have been possible without the countless supporters and activists like you. Here in Washington State and across the U.S. we will continue to fight for our shared values.
