Rochester Diocese using old legal 'playbook' by declaring bankruptcy, say victims' advocates

Reeling under the financial weight of clerical sexual misconduct lawsuits, Rochester joined a list of other dioceses across the country that have also filed for bankruptcy protection, which, say victim advocates and legal scholars, denies victims their day in court, can cover up wrongdoings and result in lower settlements.

Fifteen states have revised their laws in the past two years extending or suspending statute of limitations to allow child sex abuse claims stretching back decades, unleashing potentially thousands of new lawsuits.
