Washington, D.C. – Today, Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie released the following statement calling for swift action from District agencies in response to the deplorable stormwater flooding conditions throughout Ward 5:

“Last night, I was in communication with DC Water, the Department of Transportation (DDOT), the Department of Energy and the Environment (DOEE), and the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) to find immediate solutions to address stormwater flooding throughout Ward 5.”

“Today, I visited and spoke with impacted business owners, residents, and civic leaders to convey that the continued flooding conditions are simply unacceptable. I publicly demanded that agency leaders come to the community to observe the damage firsthand and follow up with a meeting with impacted residents and businessowners. I have also requested that DC Water, DDOT, DOEE, and HSEMA provide communications strategies for alerting ANCs, civic associations, business organizations, and impacted residents, in addition to financial relief for those hit hardest by the series of storms.”

“Since taking office, I have championed the completion of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel and solutions to address stormwater flooding, so to have this happening years later is completely untenable. I look forward to working collaboratively with District agencies on sustainable solutions to alleviate flooding throughout the ward.”
