Senate Democrats passed a historic bill this weekend. It’s called the
Inflation Reduction Act and it will take major steps to invest in clean
energy, cut carbon emissions, tax corporations and the rich, and allow
Medicare to negotiate certain prescription drug prices.

And yet, it could’ve been better, but corporate Democrats like Manchin and
Sinema decided to block any improvements to the bill. Bernie Sanders
introduced amendments to extend the Child Tax Credit and expand Medicare
to cover vision, hearing, and dental for seniors. Only two Democrats voted
with Bernie on Medicare expansion, not a single Democrat voted with him
for the Child Tax Credit. Senator Warnock introduced an amendment to
expand Medicaid to millions of people. Bernie and only two other Democrats
voted for it.

This all happened while Senator Sinema voted with the GOP to protect
private equity firms from tax increases. What went on in the Senate is
exactly what happens when the most conservative, corporate-backed faction
wields power in the Democratic Party. The Inflation Reduction Act is a
policy victory, but it could’ve been so much more.

That’s why Justice Democrats is focused on electing BETTER Democrats, not
just the same corporate-backed Democrats. We’re re-electing the Squad —
AOC, Cori, Jamaal, Ilhan, Rashida, and Ayanna — and expanding the Squad by
adding Summer Lee and Greg Casar to our JD bloc in Congress.

While Democrats control the House, Senate, and the White House, we should
be expanding public health care programs like Medicare and Medicaid,
sending support to families with the Child Tax Credit, and so much more.

We will get significant wins in the Inflation Reduction Act, including
$369 billion towards clean energy and fighting climate change, a 40% cut
to carbon emissions by 2040, and lower energy and health care costs for
millions. But corporate Democrats allowed corporate lobbyists, and
Senators Manchin and Sinema to block this bill from including desperately
needed policies supported by President Biden and the vast majority of
Democrats.

We will continue our work with the Squad and Bernie to advocate for
progressive policies. And we will continue to elect better Democrats so we
can transform the Democratic Party.
