In 2017, following a House vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act in its entirety, from its protections for people with pre-existing conditions to free preventive care and mandatory birth control coverage, Rep. Ann Wagner gleefully exclaimed “ Freedom! ”
“Freedom” is Wagner’s rationale for a whole host of unprecedented, socially-conservative government interventions in Americans’ lives: making it more difficult, if not impossible, for millions of Americans to vote in free and fair elections; threatening the basic human right to love who we choose to love, and be recognized equally under law; and rolling back the ability to make one’s own decisions about reproduction and healthcare.
This isn’t freedom ; it’s the vision of social control that Wagner’s masters want her to pursue, which she does faithfully and without accountability.
But freedom as most of us know it, and experience it, absolutely is on the ballot : Reproductive freedom. Freedom to elect our leaders peacefully and fairly. Freedom from the carnage of unregulated gun violence.
Wagner doesn’t get to distort the stakes, and she won’t be able to own the mantle of freedom. Trish is already presenting this argument to the voters, and winning—people do not want Wagner’s twisted Handmaid’s Tale social experiment.
