Albuquerque police announcing fourth killing in a news conference on Saturday (8/8/2022).

Dear John,

Emgage is deeply saddened by the murders of four Muslim men in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The killings, which have happened over the past nine months, are suspected to be connected on the basis of the victims’ Muslim identities. The victims include Mohammad Zahir Ahmadi, who was killed last year, Aftab Hussein and Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, who were killed on separate occasions within the last month, and Naeem Hussain, who was killed this past weekend.

The killer has not yet been identified, posing an alarming threat to Albuquerque Muslims and Muslim Americans generally. Additionally, these murders have yet to be investigated as 'hate crimes'.

Ahmad Assed, president of the Islamic Center of New Mexico.

"Incredibly terrified. Panicked. Some people want to move from the state until this thing is over," said Ahmad Assed, president of the Islamic Center of New Mexico. "Businesses are closing...early. Students won't leave their homes. It's affecting people from coming over to the mosque to conduct their services, their prayers. So, in every aspect of daily life that we're used to or accustomed to following, it's impacted it in every way possible."

We are calling on Albuquerque police, the New Mexico State Government, as well as federal law enforcement agencies, to employ every possible resource into these investigations to apprehend the individual or individuals targeting Muslims. We send our most heartfelt prayers to the victims and their families as they grapple with the unfathomable reality of religious violence in modern America.

In solidarity,

Wa'el Alzayat
