Weekly Newsletter August 7th, 2022 Miller-Meeks Mailer Friends, Thank you for signing up for my weekly newsletter, where you can find updates on my work in Washington and across the Second District. Visit My Website CISA Roundtable Hackers and foreign adversaries, such as China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea frequently look towards the United States for weaknesses that can be exploited and increasingly find them through internet connectivity. When cyber attacks occur, personal data and confidential information are targets that put Americans and the United States at risk. Businesses, municipalities, and hospitals are also targets of cyber attacks. Proprietary business data, civic, personal, and health information are stored on servers that are susceptible to attacks. And because technology touches all aspects of our lives, and is growing as rely on it more, and are less diligent in protecting our online presence, the risk of cyber attacks increase. Last year, Americans across the country were affected by a cyber attack on the Colonial Pipeline. This attack created a energy crisis on the East Coast, temporarily shutting down the Colonial Pipeline, which caused gas prices dramatically increase overnight. Unfortunately, cyber attacks happen close to home affecting people in our community. Throughout the years, Muscatine County, Mercy Iowa City Hospitals, local school districts and governments and JBS (which has a plant in Ottumwa) have fallen victim to cyber attacks. I encourage everyone to research Cybersecurity Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) tips to protect your data from nefarious actors. Some strategies CISA recommends involve backing up data, enabling multi-factor authentication, and keeping your software updated. Software developers are always looking for ways to protect their software and make software resistant to cyber threats. By updating your software, you are making your data more secure. I recently held a round table in Davenport with Director Kirk and Geoffrey Jenista from CISA to discuss how to protect yourself, your family, or your workplace from cyber attacks. An innocent looking e-mail may put you or the company you work for at tremendous risk. I once again encourage you to go to CISA’s website and look up tips to protect yourself or your workplace as you never know when a cyber attack may occur. Legislative Roundup I recently introduced the bipartisan Biochar Research Network Act of 2022. This bill would create a National Biochar Research Network where biochar would be tested on varieties of soil to see how well biochar absorbs carbon and benefit farmers in surrounding areas by increasing crop production. We can all agree that we want to leave a cleaner, healthier planet for our children and grandchildren. Our agricultural sector in Iowa is vital to our economy and biochar sits at the intersection of smart agriculture, environment, and energy practices. Biochar has the incredible potential to help sequester carbon in our agriculture communities and we must ensure that we are using every resource at our fingertips to promote this innovative tool, The benefits of biochar are not yet fully recognized, and this bill would promote research and provide us the information we need to fully utilize biochar in a variety of types of soil and methods. 24 County Tour It is always great to meet with Iowans as I travel across the Second District! It truly is my favorite part of serving in Congress. Speaking to as many Iowans as possible allows me to stay informed of what is going on in their communities and what I can do to help them! Recently, I had the chance to join Iowa City Area Association of Realtors to discuss how we can work together to revitalize our local hometowns, businesses, and homes to attract visitors and residents to Iowa. Biochar is a growing industry that helps both farmers and the environment. That is why I was glad to meet with the Stine Seed Facility to see the process hands-on. I also toured Cemen Tech in Indianola to learn about how cement is processed and transported and how Congress can aid them with supply-chain issues and record-high inflation. I also toured DuPont in Fort Madison this past week. DuPont produces over 7 million liters of ink a year. While on my visit I learned that DuPont shut down a factory in Singapore and allocated production to this facility, increasing jobs for Iowans. I finished my week meeting with the Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant to thank them for all of the hard work and support they provide to the local community. I also got to meet with Eddy again after meeting with him in Washington. I was so happy to see the hard work and dedication Eddy put into his business, Djaagou-A, in person. Be sure to follow me on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube for more updates. ### Rep.
